Good Pruning Is Mostly Restraint
Tree trimming and pruning keep a tree safe and in proportion to the house it shades. In Dublin, the most common requests are lifting limbs off a roof or solar array, thinning a dense canopy before winter wind, taking out deadwood over a patio, and raising low branches over a driveway or sidewalk. The goal each time is to remove what needs to go and leave a tree that grows back in a sound shape.
Why the way we cut matters here
Dublin's heritage tree ordinance exempts pruning that follows the International Society of Arboriculture's tree pruning guidelines. It also treats extreme pruning that permanently disfigures a tree as an "effective removal," which needs a permit. In other words, the city does not just care whether a big oak or redwood stays standing; it cares whether it is pruned properly. Topping, lion-tailing and stubbing are out. We cut at the branch collar, remove a limited share of live canopy at a time, and leave the natural form intact.
Common trimming jobs
- Roof and gutter clearance. Limbs rubbing shingles or tile, or dropping leaves into gutters.
- Solar clearance. Shade on panels costs output; we prune back the branches that cast it.
- Crown thinning. Selective removal of interior branches so wind passes through instead of loading the tree like a sail.
- Crown raising. Lifting low limbs over walkways, driveways and the street.
- Deadwood removal. Dead limbs in a mature tree are the ones most likely to fall.
- Structural pruning of young trees. Picking a single leader and spacing scaffold limbs while the cuts are still small.
Fire-season trimming
Homes near the open hills benefit from pruning with CAL FIRE's defensible space numbers in mind. That guidance calls for removing branches within 10 feet of a chimney or stovepipe outlet, removing tree branches at least 6 feet up from the ground, keeping a vertical gap of three times a shrub's height between the shrub and the lowest limbs, and keeping branches in the first 30 feet roughly 10 feet from other trees. We will tell you which of those your trees need, and which would harm the tree to force.
Timing
Most deadwood and clearance pruning can happen any time of year. Heavier structural work on many deciduous trees goes best when they are dormant. For oaks, we keep cuts modest and avoid big wounds, because UC oak guidance notes that large pruning wounds can let decay in.
What Trimming Covers
Each pruning job is scoped by what is being removed and why.
Clearance pruning
Branches cut back from roofs, walls, solar panels, chimneys and fences.
Crown thinning
Selective interior cuts to reduce wind load and let light through, without changing the tree's outline.
Crown raising
Lower limbs removed to clear walks, drives and sightlines, and to separate the canopy from ground fuels.
Deadwood removal
Dead and broken limbs taken out of mature canopies before they fall.
Young tree training
Early cuts that set a strong structure and save expensive corrections later.
Service drop clearance
Branches near the wire from pole to house, scheduled with a PG&E temporary disconnect when needed.

How Trimming Works
1. Agree on the goal
Clearance, thinning, deadwood or fire-season limbing: we decide together what the cut list is for.
2. Mark the cuts
We point out which limbs come out and explain anything we recommend leaving.
3. Written estimate
Price per tree, with cleanup and hauling listed.
4. Prune and clean up
Cuts made at the collar, brush chipped, and the yard left clean.

Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions
Do I need a permit to trim a heritage tree in Dublin?
Not for pruning that follows the ISA pruning guidelines. Heavy pruning that permanently disfigures a heritage tree counts as effective removal and does need a permit.
How often should trees be trimmed?
Many mature trees do well with attention every few years, and young trees benefit from lighter pruning more often. Fast growers near roofs or solar panels may need clearance more frequently.
Is topping a tree ever a good idea?
No. Topping leaves large stubs that decay and regrow as weak, crowded shoots. On a heritage species in Dublin it can also be treated as removal.
Can you trim branches near the power line on the street?
No. PG&E clears its own lines and only line-clearance-qualified crews should work near them. We can trim near the service drop to your house with a temporary disconnect arranged through PG&E.
