Tree Work That Starts With the City's Rules
Tree service in Dublin begins with one question: is the tree a heritage tree? Dublin's Municipal Code Chapter 5.60 protects oak, bay, cypress, maple, redwood, buckeye and sycamore trees with a trunk 24 inches or more in diameter, measured 4 feet 6 inches above natural grade. The rule applies to private yards too, so a big valley oak behind a West Dublin house is covered the same way as one on a commercial lot. We measure first, then plan the work.
Two very different housing stocks
Dublin grew in two waves. The first housing tracts in West Dublin went up in 1960, and about 13 percent of the city's homes date to the 1960s. Then the east side filled in: census estimates put the city's median year built at 2004, with more than half of all homes built since 2000. Neighborhoods like Wallis Ranch, which opened its first phase in 2016, and the Toll Brothers homes at Tassajara Hills are part of that newer growth.
Those two groups need different things. In the older tracts, street and yard trees have had 60 years to grow, and many now hang over roofs, crowd power drops or lift walkways. In the newer neighborhoods the trees are young, and the most useful work is structural pruning that sets up a strong shape before limbs get heavy.
What counts as removal in Dublin
The heritage tree chapter does not only cover cutting a tree down. It also covers what the code calls effective removal, which includes extreme pruning that goes against accepted arboricultural practice and leaves the tree permanently disfigured. Topping a protected oak to open a view can fall into that category. Routine pruning that follows the International Society of Arboriculture's Tree Pruning Guidelines is exempt, so we prune to those standards: thinning, clearance and deadwood removal, with cuts made at the branch collar instead of stubs.
Permit help before the saw comes out
When a heritage tree has to come out, the code requires a permit from the Director before removal. We help you gather what the city will want to see: species, trunk diameter, location on the lot, photos and the reason for removal, plus a certified arborist's assessment when the condition of the tree is the reason. We line up that arborist visit; the report itself comes from the arborist. If a tree poses an immediate hazard to life or property, the code allows removal with approval from the Director, the City Engineer, the Police Chief, the Fire Chief or a designee, so a split oak after a storm is handled through that path rather than a normal application.
Hills and valley floor
Dublin sits at about 367 feet on the valley floor along Interstate 580, but its western edge climbs into the West Dublin Hills and the eastern neighborhoods push up toward the Tassajara hills. Hillside lots often mean steeper access, limited room for a chipper and more native oak and bay. Flat lots in the valley tend to have planted trees: sycamores, pines, fruit trees and fast growers chosen by the original builder. We plan rigging, equipment access and cleanup around whichever kind of lot you have.
Stumps and replanting
After a removal, stump grinding clears the way for a new tree, lawn or patio. If your removal was part of a heritage tree permit, check the permit conditions before planting: replacement trees can be required, and a replacement tree planted for an unlawful removal is itself treated as a heritage tree under the code. Call (925) 966-3413 and we can talk through the tree, the rules and the order of work.
What to Know in Dublin
- Heritage tree size. Oak, bay, cypress, maple, redwood, buckeye and sycamore with a trunk of 24 inches or more in diameter at 4 feet 6 inches above grade are heritage trees (DMC 5.60.040).
- Applies to private yards. Chapter 5.60 covers all property in the city, including private residential lots, developed or not (DMC 5.60.030).
- Pruning exemption. Pruning that follows the ISA Tree Pruning Guidelines does not need a heritage tree permit; extreme pruning that disfigures the tree counts as removal.
- Housing age. Median year built is 2004, with 30.6% of homes built 2010-2019 and 13.4% in the 1960s when the first West Dublin tracts went up.
- Location. Alameda County city in the Amador Valley, incorporated February 1, 1982, at the I-580 and I-680 junction, elevation about 367 feet.

Dublin Questions
Do I need a permit to prune a big oak in my Dublin backyard?
Not for routine pruning that follows the ISA Tree Pruning Guidelines. A permit is needed if the work removes the tree or amounts to extreme pruning that permanently disfigures it, which the code treats the same as removal.
How do I know if my tree is a heritage tree?
Measure the trunk diameter at 4.5 feet above the ground. If it is 24 inches or more and the tree is an oak, bay, cypress, maple, redwood, buckeye or sycamore, it qualifies. Trees that were required to be saved under a development approval also count, whatever their size.
What happens if a heritage tree splits in a storm?
The code has an exception for trees that present an immediate hazard to life or property, with approval from a city official such as the Director, City Engineer, Police Chief or Fire Chief. Call us and the city, and keep photos of the damage.
