Trees That Have Outgrown Their Planting Strips
San Ramon is a younger city, and that shows in the tree service it needs. Incorporated in 1983, it grew from 72,148 people in 2010 to 84,605 in 2020, and census estimates put the median home at 1994, with more than a quarter of homes built from 2000 to 2009. The trees planted with those homes are now 20 to 40 years old, big enough to crowd fences, lift walks and shade out lawns.
Stump grinding in tight spaces
Many San Ramon removals happen in narrow side yards and small backyards behind a fence with a single gate. That is where stump grinding matters. We use a grinder that fits through a standard side gate, grind the stump below the surface so you can plant, lay sod or set pavers over it, and chase surface roots that would otherwise trip the mower. The chips can stay as mulch or go away with us. Before we grind, we ask about irrigation lines, low-voltage lighting and any utility marks, because these lots usually have all three close to the stump.
Structural pruning for young trees
A tree that is pruned well in its first 20 years needs far less work later. The goal is one strong central leader where the species allows it, branches spaced along the trunk instead of clustered at one point, and no tight V-shaped unions that can split. Many San Ramon trees are right at the age where this still works. Wait another decade and the same problem becomes a large cut or a removal.
Hills on both sides
The city lies between Las Trampas Regional Wilderness at its northwest edge and Mount Diablo to the northeast, and the Bishop Ranch Regional Preserve straddles its western border. In the hills next to those open spaces, the native canopy is mostly coast live oak and California bay laurel. San Ramon also gets more rain than the valley towns to the south, about 26.5 inches a year, so winter storms with saturated soil can tip shallow-rooted trees. Homes backing onto open space should keep limbs off the roof and dead material away from the house.
HOAs and the city
Many San Ramon neighborhoods have homeowners associations with rules about tree removal and replacement in front yards and common areas. We could not confirm the city's own tree ordinance online for this page, so check with the City of San Ramon planning staff before removing a large tree, and check your HOA's guidelines too. We can give you a written scope, species and trunk size for both.

San Ramon Questions
Can a stump grinder fit through my side gate?
In most San Ramon yards, yes. Tell us the gate width when you call so we bring the right machine.
How deep do you grind a stump?
Deep enough to plant grass or a small shrub over it, and deeper where a new tree is going in. Large surface roots can be ground out along their length too.
Do I need HOA approval to remove a tree?
Many associations require it, especially for front-yard trees. Check your guidelines; we can give you the details the committee usually asks for.
