First Steps When a Tree Fails
Emergency tree service is for the calls that cannot wait for a routine visit: a limb through the roof, a trunk split down the middle after a storm, a tree across the driveway, or a leaning tree that moved overnight. In Dublin, most of these happen during winter storms, when saturated soil and wind combine, but dry-season limb drop from stressed trees happens too. We prioritize hazards and come out as soon as the schedule allows.
Before you call anyone
- Stay away from any wire. Treat every downed or sagging line as live. PG&E's guidance is to call 911 first, then PG&E at 1-800-743-5000.
- Get people out of the room under a damaged section of roof.
- Do not climb or cut a tree that is under tension or resting on something. Bent trunks and hung-up limbs can spring with great force.
- Take photos of the tree, the damage and the yard before anything is moved. Insurance adjusters will want them.
What we do on an emergency visit
The first job is to make it safe: take weight off the roof or fence, remove hanging limbs, and cut the tree down to a stable state. Full cleanup, stump grinding and roof repair can follow on a normal schedule. We document what we remove so you have a record for your insurer, and we price the stabilizing work separately from the full cleanup so you can see both.
Heritage trees in an emergency
Dublin's Heritage Tree Ordinance allows removal without the usual permit when a tree poses an immediate hazard to life or property, but that exception requires approval from the Community Development Director, the City Engineer, the Police Chief, the Fire Chief or a designee. If a large oak, redwood, sycamore or other listed species is the problem, we help you get that approval before taking more than what is needed to make the scene safe. A tree that only looks worrying, without immediate danger, goes through the normal permit process.
Power lines and the service drop
If the tree is on a PG&E line, nothing happens until PG&E clears or de-energizes it. Only line-clearance-qualified workers should be near energized lines. If the tree has pulled down the service drop to your house, PG&E handles the line, and an electrician may be needed for the mast or meter. We work after the power side is safe.
After the storm
Once the crisis is over, look at the trees that stood. A tree that lost a major limb may now be lopsided or have a large wound that invites decay. Others nearby may have shifted. A follow-up look, with pruning or removal where needed, is usually cheaper than the next emergency.
What Emergency Service Covers
Stabilize first, then clean up on a normal schedule.
Tree on a roof or structure
Weight lifted off in sections with rigging, so the roof can be tarped and repaired.
Fallen tree cleanup
Trees down across yards, driveways and fences cut up and removed.
Hanging and split limbs
Broken limbs still caught in the canopy brought down under control.
Leaning tree assessment
A tree that has shifted in wet soil checked for root failure and removed or reduced if needed.
Insurance documentation
Photos and a written description of the work and the damage it addressed.

Typical Emergency Tree Costs
| Job | Typical range |

| Same-day or next-day removal | About 2 - 3 times the standard removal rate |
| Urgent removal, complex or over a structure | Up to about $5,000 |
| Crane, when needed | About $250 - $600 per day added |
National ranges from HomeGuide and Angi. Ranges vary with tree size, what the tree is resting on, rigging or crane needs, time of day and debris volume. Homeowners insurance may cover some storm work; check your policy. Your written estimate is the price.

Emergency Tree Service Questions
Does homeowners insurance pay for tree removal?
Often when a tree damages a covered structure, and sometimes for cleanup with limits. A tree that falls without hitting anything may not be covered. Check your policy and take photos before cleanup.
A tree fell on the power line to my house. Who do I call?
Call 911 if anyone is in danger, then PG&E at 1-800-743-5000. Stay clear of the wire. Tree work starts after PG&E has made the line safe.
Do I need a permit to remove a heritage tree that fell?
Immediate hazards can be removed without the normal permit, but Dublin's code requires approval from the Director, City Engineer, Police Chief, Fire Chief or a designee. Call the city and keep photos.
Can you come right away?
We cannot promise a time without knowing the schedule and the storm load, but hazards to people and homes are handled first, and we will tell you honestly when we can be there.
