Foothill Lots and Wildfire Fuel

Blackhawk homeowners usually call for tree service with two goals: keep the landscape looking good and keep fuel away from the house. Blackhawk sits in the southwestern foothills of Mount Diablo at about 997 feet, much higher than Danville or San Ramon. Florida developer Ken Behring bought roughly 6,200 acres in 1975, the first homes opened in 1979, and the development was completed in the early 1990s, with more than 2,000 acres offered to Mount Diablo State Park as open space.

Fire hazard zones, explained

California's State Fire Marshal maps Fire Hazard Severity Zones as Moderate, High or Very High, based on fuel, terrain, fire history and typical fire weather. State Responsibility Area maps took effect April 1, 2024, and maps for local areas were released to local jurisdictions in phases in early 2025. The maps measure hazard, not risk, and they do not account for defensible space. What you do with the trees around the house is what changes your risk. Look up your own address on the State Fire Marshal's map to see where it falls.

What fire-smart pruning looks like

  • Removing dead branches, which burn first and carry flame
  • Raising the lower canopy so ground fire cannot climb into the crown
  • Cutting back limbs that overhang the roof and chimney
  • Opening space between tree crowns near the house
  • Clearing out dead brush, junipers and debris under trees

We do this without stripping trees bare. A healthy, well-spaced oak canopy is part of the fire picture, not just a hazard.

Gutters and roofs

Pine needles and oak leaves in gutters and on roofs are an easy ember target in fire season. Cutting limbs back from the roofline reduces how much falls there in the first place. We can pair pruning visits with a reminder to clear gutters before summer.

Homes from the 1980s and 1990s

Census estimates show about 81 percent of Blackhawk homes were built in the 1980s and 1990s, and 91 percent are single-family detached. Landscape trees planted then are now 30 to 45 years old. Pines and redwoods planted close to houses for screening are often the trees that need the most attention: they have grown over roofs, dropped needles into gutters, and some have died back in drought years.

Working inside a gated community

Blackhawk is gated, with two 18-hole golf courses. We arrange gate access with you ahead of time, follow any association rules about work hours and truck parking, and keep chips and debris off common areas. If your association requires approval for removals or replanting, we provide the details its committee usually asks for.

Oaks and county rules

Blackhawk is unincorporated Contra Costa County. Native oaks on these hillsides deserve careful pruning, not topping. Before removing any large oak, check with the county; we can supply measurements and photos. Call (925) 966-3413 to set up a visit.

Blackhawk Questions

Will fire-smart pruning make my yard look bare?

It should not. The work targets dead wood, ladder fuels and limbs over the roof. Healthy canopy stays; it just gets space around it.

Can you coordinate with our gate and HOA?

Yes. We schedule gate access with you and follow association rules on hours, parking and approvals.

How do I find my fire hazard zone?

The State Fire Marshal publishes Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps you can search by address. Remember the maps show hazard, and defensible space is what lowers your actual risk.
