Young Trees, Set Up Right

Camino Tassajara is one of the newest communities we serve, and the most valuable tree service here is often the least dramatic: pruning young trees so they grow strong. Census estimates put the median year built at 2008, with about 58 percent of homes built in the 2000s and 38 percent in the 2010s. The population more than doubled between 2010 and 2020, from 2,197 to 4,951.

Why prune a young tree?

A tree planted with a new house is easy to shape. Cuts are small, they close quickly, and the tree spends its energy on the branches you keep. Structural pruning at this stage aims for:

  • A single dominant trunk where the species grows that way
  • Main branches spaced up and around the trunk, not bunched at one spot
  • Branches smaller in diameter than the trunk they attach to
  • No tight V-shaped forks with bark pinched between them
  • Clearance planned for the future height of the roof, walk and street

Do this two or three times over the first 15 years and you avoid most of the big, expensive cuts later.

Builder trees that were wrong for the spot

In newer neighborhoods, some trees were planted too close to the house, a wall or a driveway, or are species that will outgrow the yard. Removing them while they are small is quick and cheap compared to waiting. We grind the stump, and you can replant with something that fits.

Mulch, water and staking

Pruning is only part of young-tree care. A ring of wood-chip mulch, kept a few inches off the trunk, holds moisture and keeps mowers and string trimmers away from the bark. Deep, infrequent watering trains roots to grow down instead of staying at the surface. We use the chips from our own work for mulch when you want them.

Higher ground

The community sits at about 814 feet, higher than the valley floor around Danville and San Ramon, and the new subdivisions are surrounded by open grass and oak hillsides. Wind, sun and summer heat hit young trees hard on exposed lots. Stakes left on too long, girdling ties and mulch piled against the trunk are common problems we fix during a pruning visit.

HOAs and the county

Camino Tassajara is an unincorporated census-designated place in Contra Costa County that first appeared in the 2010 census. Most homes are in planned subdivisions where an association has landscape rules. Check those rules before removing or replacing a front-yard tree, and check with the county before removing any large native oak on the property.

Camino Tassajara Questions

My trees are only ten years old. Do they need pruning?

That is the best time. Small cuts now set the structure and prevent weak forks and heavy limbs that cost much more to fix later.

Should the stakes on my young tree come off?

Usually after a year or two, once the roots have taken hold. Ties left on too long can cut into the bark.

Can I remove a builder tree that is too close to the house?

Usually, but check your HOA rules first, especially for front yards. Removing a small tree and replanting with a better fit is quick work.
