Tree Work for Small Lots and Rentals
Ashland is compact and dense, and tree service here usually means working in tight spaces. The unincorporated community covers just 1.8 square miles with nearly 8,000 homes, and about two thirds of households rent. Owners and landlords call us for trees that are crowding buildings, dropping limbs in parking areas or lifting walkways.
For landlords and property managers
On a rental property, a tree problem is a liability problem. We give you a clear written scope that lists each tree, the work and the reason, which helps with tenant communication and your own records. Common jobs include:
- Clearing limbs off roofs and away from gutters
- Removing dead branches over parking spaces and walks
- Raising canopies over driveways for vehicle clearance
- Removing trees that have outgrown a small yard
- Grinding stumps so the area is safe to walk
We can coordinate access with tenants when you give us contact details and preferred times.
Older housing
Ashland developed as a residential suburb in the 1940s. Census estimates put the median year built at 1963, with about 46 percent of homes built before 1960 and 8 percent before 1940. Older homes often have big trees planted close to foundations and old sewer lines, which is where root problems start.
Trees and power drops
On small lots the service drop from the pole to the house often runs right through a tree. We can prune around the drop to the house when it is safe to do so, keeping limbs back so wind does not rub or snap the line. Lines on the poles themselves belong to the utility, and we will tell you when a job needs their crew first.
Replanting in a small yard
If a tree comes out, think about what goes back. Small-statured trees such as crape myrtle, strawberry tree or a dwarf fruit tree fit a compact yard far better than a pine or ash that will be 50 feet tall in 30 years. Plant at least several feet from the foundation and away from the sewer lateral.
The creek edge
Ashland is named after the Oregon ash, which grew along San Lorenzo Creek, the community's southern border. Lots near the creek have more native trees, wetter soil and more lean toward the water. Removing a tree on a creek bank calls for care to keep the bank stable, and work in the channel can involve other agencies.
County rules
Ashland is unincorporated and governed by Alameda County. The county says there are currently no countywide ordinances regulating trees on private property in unincorporated areas. Trees in the county road right-of-way, such as street trees in a parkway strip, are protected under the county's Tree Ordinance through the Public Works Agency.
