Old Trees in a Small Place

Diablo is tiny, about 1,255 residents and 455 homes on 1.4 square miles, so tree service here is about individual trees rather than whole streets. The community sits roughly 2.5 miles east-northeast of downtown Danville along the road toward Mount Diablo State Park's Diablo Road entrance, and its post office dates to 1916. Lots are large and the landscape is mature.

Old homes, older trees

Census estimates put Diablo's median year built at 1980, but the spread is unusual: about 22 percent of homes are from the 1950s and another 8 percent from the 1940s, alongside newer houses from the 1980s and 2000s. Older estates often have trees that were planted generations ago, plus native oaks that predate any house. A tree that size deserves a slow look before anyone picks up a saw.

Keeping a big tree safely

Often the right move for a large old tree is not removal. Options include:

  • Reducing end weight on long limbs that hang over a roof or driveway
  • Removing deadwood and old broken stubs
  • Supplemental support systems, such as cables, on trees with a weak fork, when an arborist recommends them
  • Mulching the root zone and moving irrigation away from oak trunks

We explain what each option does and what it cannot do. Support systems need periodic inspection, for example, and do not fix decay.

Why we take our time

On a lot with an old tree and a finished garden, the fastest job is rarely the best one. We walk the property first, decide where pieces will land and where the chipper will sit, then work in a sequence that keeps the garden intact. That planning is part of the estimate.

Access on narrow roads

Narrow private lanes, gates, stone walls and established gardens are typical here. We size equipment to the access, protect lawns and beds with mats, and plan where chips and logs will go before the first cut. Some jobs are done entirely by climbing because a lift cannot get close without damage.

Mount Diablo's influence

The mountain above Diablo is covered in mixed oak woodland, grassland and chaparral, with gray pine on the higher and north-facing slopes. That native mix reaches right into the edges of town. Dead oak limbs and accumulated litter near homes are worth clearing each year before fire season, and the State Fire Marshal's hazard zone map is a good place to see how your address is classified.

County rules

Diablo is an unincorporated census-designated place in Contra Costa County, carved out of the Alamo area for the 2000 census. Check with the county before removing large oaks. If you also belong to a club or association with landscape rules, check those as well. Call (925) 966-3413 to set up a visit.

Diablo Questions

Can a cable save a split-prone tree?

Sometimes. A properly installed support system can reduce the chance of a weak fork failing, but it does not fix decay and needs regular inspection. We tell you plainly when removal is the safer call.

Our lane is narrow. Can you still do the job?

Usually. We match equipment to the access, and many Diablo jobs are done by climbing with ropes instead of a lift.

How often should an old estate tree be inspected?

Every few years for a healthy tree, and after any major storm or when you see new cracks, fungus or dead limbs.
