What Stump Grinding Does and Does Not Do
Stump grinding uses a machine with a toothed cutting wheel to chew a stump down into wood chips, below the surface of the soil. It is faster and far less disruptive than digging a stump out, and it leaves the yard ready for new turf, a planting bed or pavers. In Dublin we grind stumps left from our own removals and old stumps that have been sitting in yards for years.
How deep is deep enough
The right depth depends on what goes there next. For lawn or ground cover, a few inches below grade is usually plenty. For a new tree in the same area, grinding deeper and removing more chips gives the new roots room. For hardscape, we grind deeper still and remove chips so the base material sits on soil, not decaying wood that will settle.
What stays in the ground
Grinding removes the stump and the root flare, not the whole root system. The larger roots that run out under the lawn are left to decay unless they are surfacing or in the way of new work, in which case we can chase them with the grinder. As roots decay, small low spots can appear, and topping them up with soil is normal.
Before we grind: utilities and access
Grinding cuts into the soil, so buried lines matter. California law calls for an 811 ticket before digging, and PG&E says to call at least two working days ahead. Irrigation lines and low-voltage lighting are not marked by 811, so we ask you where those run. Access is the other question: most backyard grinders fit through a standard side gate, but a stump on a slope or behind a narrow gate may need a smaller machine or more hand work.
Oak and bay stumps
If the tree came down because of suspected sudden oak death, UC guidance recommends keeping infected material on site rather than moving it, and chipping is one of the recommended ways to handle it. Ask us to leave the grindings as mulch in that case. Keep in mind that a stump from a heritage tree removed without a permit is still evidence of a violation; grinding it does not change the city's process.
Chips: keep or haul
Grindings make a decent mulch for beds once they have aged. A large stump produces a surprising volume, so if you do not want them, hauling is quoted as its own line.
What Stump Grinding Covers
Priced by stump size, access and what happens to the chips.
Single stump grinding
One stump ground below grade, with chips left in the hole or raked out.
Multiple stumps
Additional stumps on the same visit, priced lower per stump than the first.
Surface root grinding
Roots that lift lawn or catch mowers ground out along their run.
Deep grinding for replanting or paving
Extra depth and chip removal so new trees or base rock sit on soil.
Chip haul-away and backfill
Grindings removed and the hole filled with soil, ready for seed, sod or planting.

How Stump Grinding Works
1. Measure and look
Diameter at ground level, surface roots, slope and gate width.
2. Utilities
811 ticket for marked lines; you show us sprinklers and lighting.
3. Grind
The wheel sweeps back and forth across the stump until it is below the agreed depth.
4. Finish
Chips raked into the hole or hauled, and backfill added if that was part of the estimate.

Stump Grinding Questions
Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?
Yes, though it is usually better to offset the new tree a few feet from the old root mass. If you want it in the same spot, ask for deeper grinding and chip removal.
Will the stump grow back?
Some species send up sprouts from roots after removal. Grinding below grade removes the root flare, which cuts down on regrowth; occasional sprouts can be clipped as they appear.
How long does grinding take?
An average residential stump often takes well under an hour of grinding. Large stumps, hard wood and lots of surface roots take longer.
Do you need to bring a big machine into my backyard?
Usually a compact grinder that fits through a standard side gate. Tight access or steep ground can change the equipment and the price, which we note on the estimate.
